Reasons for SD card Corruption

When we talk about SD card corruption, we should know that there are two ways: corruption in software level which is fixable, and corruption in hardware level that you have to send it to local reparation service or replace it with a new one. So, we’re talking about the first.

Many reasons can lead to SD card corruption. Here is a short-list that includes common reasons.

  1. File table corruption.
  2. Reset the external hard drive which causes data loss.
  3. Accidental deletion of some system files which makes external hard drive unreadable by the computer.
  4. Unplug external hard drive from the computer without ejecting or safe remove.
  5. External hard drive not recognized, or not detected by the computer for an unknown reason.
  6. Virus infection.

Possible Solutions to Try Out First

Before starting to recover photos, some basic checks are necessary.

  1. Connect the SD card to a different USB port on your computer to check if it’s the USB port’s issue.
  2. Insert the SD card to a different card reader to check if it’s the card reader’s issue.
  3. Plug the SD card with a card reader to a different computer to check if it’s the operating system or driver’s issue.
  4. Make sure the file system of the SD card is recognized by the operating system in read-write mode. For example, Windows PC works with NTFS, FAT32, exFAT file systems, while Mac supports APFS, HFS+, HFS, exFAT, FAT32.

  2. Restore the recovered photos to a different location, such as another drive, USB, external HDD, etc.
  3. No data recovery software can promise a 100% recovery rate. It could be affected by various factors, including the degree of corruption, the time you start to perform data recovery after corruption, as well as whether the data has been overwritten.
  4. Most of those so-called free data recovery software supports recovering a limited size of files. You should read it carefully. iBoysoft Data Recovery for Windows supports recovering within 1 GB files for free.
